Triple Crown Update

by FarmVet Racehorse Salesperson Brandi Goode

The racing world is buzzing with the excitement of the Triple Crown series. The 2012 Preakness stakes was won by I’ll Have Another in a thrilling chase down the stretch. The beautiful front running colt, Bodemeister tried to steal the race on the lead, but the Kentucky Derby winner would not be denied the second jewel in the Triple Crown. FarmVet customer, Mike Harrington sent out Creative Cause early in the race to push Bodemeister. The plan backfired as Creative Cause was run off his feet and ended up finishing a weakening third.

I was in the winners circle to watch the race at Pimlico Racetrack on Saturday and I could feel the electricity of the build up the entire day. I’ll Have Another, the unassuming, small, levelheaded colt did not disappoint. The record crowd of 122,000 people on hand at Pimlico rocked the place with screams and applause; I myself lost my voice and I must admit there were tears.

As if the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes were not exciting enough…….. Now Team O’neil is off to Belmont Park to attempt to be the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. By the looks of I’ll Have Another’s weight, coat, pedigree, training style, running style, confident entourage and talented jockey, a win in the Belmont Stakes is very possible. However, statistics are hard to be denied. In the last 16 years there have been 9 horses to have won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes only to be beat in the grueling 1 ½ mile Belmont Stakes.

Moving forward to Belmont there are plenty of fresh colts that will be in the race to challenge I’ll Have Another. FarmVet customer Michael Matz has had his champion colt Union Rags at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland since the Kentucky Derby. He is training forwardly and is poised for a win. The connections decided to take off jockey Julien Leparoux and put on John Valasquez. Union Rags has already won a Grade One race at Belmont Park but that was going a one-turn mile which is very different than the challenging 1 ½ mile distance.

Another FarmVet customer will try to dethrone the Triple Crown bidder. Young training sensation, Chad Brown is planning on entering Street Life. This is a fresh horse on the three year old campaign with a win in the Broad Brush and a third in the Peter Pan Stakes. This closing styled runner by Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense should appreciate the distance and is stabled at Belmont in preparation.

Stay tuned for more Triple Crown updates!!!

I’LL HAVE ANOTHER……AND MAKE IT A TRIPLE!!!!!!!

April 16, 2012

Calgary, Alberta – Rocky Mountain Show Jumping is pleased at this time to welcome FarmVet to their family of tremendous sponsors. To conclude the upcoming Bow Valley Classics next month, our competitors and fans alike will enjoy the $32,000 CSI2* FarmVet.com Grand Prix.

FarmVet is North America’s premier source for animal health products and supplies. They offer the highest level of customer service at a great value on a vast number of products to meet their customer’s needs. They have access to over 50,000 products so, odds are that if you don’t find what you are looking for online give them a call at 888-837-3626. The FarmVet web site is complete with in-depth product information and features safe, easy online ordering and order tracking.

“Every time I travel to tournaments in the US, I am just amazed at how many fellow Canadians are shopping at the Farmvet trailer,” explains John Anderson, President of Rocky Mountain Show Jumping. “I’ve asked a few of them from time to time, why Farmvet? The answer always has the same tone and typically goes something like, “These guys are great! They have everything! and have you seen their prices?” “Our sport is already expensive enough, so it is great to see a company that is aware of what their customers spend on a daily basis and one that has built their business model with the goal of saving their customers money, ” adds John.

“John and I have been friends for a long time as we used to ride together in the late 80′s with coaches Joe Fargis and Conrad Homefeld,” said Christian Currey, President and CEO of FarmVet. “He has been a good supporter of ours for years, and with the growth of Rocky Mountain Show Jumping over the past number of years, I thought by sponsoring one of their Grand Prix’s, it would be a great way for us to thank all of the Canadians who shop from us when they are in the USA. We may consider expanding to Canada in the future, but for now, feel this partnership is a great way to support our friends from Canada.”

FarmVet sponsored riders have visited Anderson Ranch over the years including double Gold Olympic Medalist Joe Fargis. “Christian was a great student and always a pleasure to teach,” laughed Fargis. “I knew he would be successful in business, and Farmvet is proof of that. He has a great knowledge of the Equine Industry, and FarmVet is always the talk of any Showjumping circuit, and don’t forget their incredible customer service,” added Fargis.

As a special treat to all of the riders competing in the $32,000 CSI2* FarmVet Grand Prix, Christian will be donating coveted FarmVet Saddle Pads, Shirts, and Hats to everyone competing in the Grand Prix. Riders and horses will sport the FarmVet logo proudly with their horses for the live streaming of the event scheduled for Saturday, May 19, 2012.

Rocky Mountain Show Jumping wants to encourage all of their followers to visit FarmVet when they are competing in the US. FarmVet has trailers onsite at most of the major competitions throughout the United States. Make sure you also “Like” both the RMSJ Facebook page, and the FarmVet Facebook page, as we will be hosting some fun events this summer to celebrate FarmVet’s support.

See a great piece in the Nashville Business Journal from a few years ago. Nashville, TN is the home of FarmVet’s headquarters.

The 1 1/2-mile San Luis Rey Stakes (gr. IIT) at rainy Santa Anita Park came down to the final jump when favored Bourbon Bay nipped Slim Shadey by a head on the turf March 25.

With Joel Rosario aboard the 6-year-old gelding for the first time, Bourbon Bay managed to wrangle plenty of drama out of a race with only five entrants. He rallied powerfully from last at the quarter pole to get up in a stirring finish while running the 12 furlongs in 2:25.78 over a turf course rated firm.

“I don’t know what he (Rosario) was doing so far back,” said winning trainer Neil Drysdale, who added that he had instructed the rider to race in second or third. “I thought he waited too long, although it’s very difficult to judge this course, how fast it is, when it starts raining. It’s very difficult.”

Bourbon Bay, six for eight in his career on the Santa Anita turf, won the San Luis Rey for the second time. David and Jill Heerensperger’s Kentucky-bred son of Sligo Bay also won it in 2010, when the race was a handicap.

Coming off a fourth-place finish in the San Marcos Stakes (gr. IIT) Feb. 11, Bourbon Bay has now won five grade II grass events at Santa Anita during his career.

The second start of the year for the 25-race campaigner would appear to have him right on edge for the meet-closing San Juan Capistrano Handicap (gr. IIT) April 22. Bourbon Bay won the ‘Capistrano in 2010.

“He’s a very good campaigner, but he doesn’t like deep turf,” Drysdale said. “That’s one of the drawbacks, so I was concerned about the course, because he doesn’t like it soft. We’ll bring him back in the San Juan Capistrano.”

Bourbon Bay was bred by Adena Springs. The bay is out of Coral Necklace, by Conquistador Cielo.

The start of the race was moved off the hillside due to the expected slickness of the going, and contested on the main turf course. Bourbon Bay, the 6-5 favorite, showed no early speed, trailing only Slim Shadey through the early portion of the race.

Hog’s Hollow, breaking from the rail, took the early lead and led Utopian and Porfido by one length after a :48 half-mile. The mile went in 1:38.28 as Utopian drew closer.

Slim Shadey, who won the 1 1/4-mile San Marcos in front-running style Feb. 11, then picked up the tempo from fourth. He pressed his way into contention for David Flores on the outside as they commenced a three-eighths mile dash for the wire.

Slim Shadey wrested the lead from a stubborn Hog’s Hollow and Utopian near mid-stretch and gradaully opened up a clear advantage at the sixteenth marker. He appeared headed for his third consecutive victory.

But Bourbon Bay, who appeared well beaten at the top of the stretch, advanced quickly in the final furlong to get up in another game effort under some urging from Rosario. “I’ve never been on him before, but he has a nice turn of foot,” Rosario marveled afterward. “He tries really hard at this distance. My horse felt good on the track. I don’t know how the others handled the rain, but everything worked out perfect for my horse.”

Slim Shadey, the 123-pound top weight, was second by 2 1/2 lengths over Hog’s Hollow, ridden by Garrett Gomez. Utopian and Porfido trailed. Slim Shadey drifted a bit from Flores’ whip in the late stages as he was nabbed at the wire.

“I wouldn’t change anything about the race today,” Flores said. “The favorite had to come and catch me if he was good enough, and he did.”

Bourbon Bay’s eighth lifetime win was worth $90,000 and boosted his career earnings to $878,536.

Crafty Unicorn made a big impression in his career debut, rolling to a 1 ¾-length victory in the male division of the $100,000 OBS Championship Stakes March 12 in Central Florida. The 3-year-old son of Friends Lake covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.80 over the Ocala Breeders’ Sale Co.’s oval, which has a synthetic Safetrack surface.

“I knew this horse was for real; I knew he had a lot of talent,” said Crafty Unicorn’s grinning owner and trainer, Dennis Manning of his colt, which had the least experience of any horse in the race. “He has been training at the Oak Ridge Equine Center, where I am the president, here in Ocala. We ran a first-time starter a couple of weeks ago at Tampa (Bay Downs); he won easy and this horse had been outrunning him at home. (Former jockey) Gary Boulanger, who has been working for me all winter as an exercise rider, said, ‘Dennis, ‘Let’s take a shot in the OBS Championship.’ I said, ‘All right, let’s do it,’ so we took him (Crafty Unicorn) here and the good Lord was smiling down on us.”

Manning wasn’t sure about the bay colt’s next target.

“You’re catching me off guard. I couldn’t tell you; I don’t know,” said Manning, who indicated a race at Tampa Bay could be in Crafty Unicorn’s future.

Ridden by Angel Serpa, the colt stalked the early pace, set by Here We Go Joe, from the inside and made his move to challenge in the second turn. Crafty Unicorn took command heading into the stretch and gained a clear lead in the final furlong. Burn the Mortgage finished second in the field of 10 runners. It was another 1 ½ lengths back to Moon Traveler, who edged Big Blue Nation by a neck for third.

Bred in Florida by Sabrina Plumley and Harold J. Plumley, Crafty Unicorn is out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Unicorn Kid. In 2009, Kaizen Sales, agent, scratched him from the Keeneland November breeding stock sale. The following year, Kazien sold the colt for $10,000 to Judy Karlin and George Santis at the OBS August yearling auction. In 2011, Nickajack/Rey de Oros, agent, bought Crafty Unicorn back for $24,000 from the OBS spring sale of 2-year-olds in training and then offered him at the OBS June sale of 2-year-olds in training and older horses. Manning said he bought the colt (in the name of Red Maple Farm) for $20,000.

“The first time I laid eyes on him, I was on my way out of the door leaving the sale,” Manning remembered. “I said, ‘Whoa who is that?’ It was just like I had seen a gorgeous woman. I said, ‘Let me look at his video.’ I saw his video and he had worked in :34 2/5 (in the under tack show). I said, ‘I’ve got to have this horse.’ I had to buy him.”

A physical problem was a factor in Crafty Unicorn’s failure to race at 2.

‘When I bought him, he had really, really bad shins,” Manning said. “We gave him time off and cooled his shins out. By then, it was fall so, where was I going to go? I decided to just give him a little bit more time to mature. After the sale, he was very hyper. We wanted to just change his attitude and get him to relax. Now he’s a gentleman. He really is. He’s a nice horse to be around; he just does everything that he’s supposed to do. He ran like a professional today, so I’m very happy with him.”

Andrew’s Girl rallied from last to first and came charging from the outside in the stretch to score by 1 ½ lengths in the $100,000 filly division of the OBS Championship Stakes. The 3-year-old daughter of Lawyer Ron turned in a time of 1:47.60 for 1 1/16 miles while being ridden by Leandro Goncalves.

“She is a filly that has one run,” said Andrew’s Girl’s trainer, Edgar Estevez. “Goncalves knows her, so he knew that no matter where she was in the race when he asked her, she was going to give him the best that she’s got.”

Oaks Lily was the runner-up, finishing 1 ½ lengths in front of Ten K Cat. The latter finished three-quarters of a length in front of Normative Appeal, who had Serpa aboard.

Bred by Stonewall Farm Stallions in Kentucky, Andrew’s Girl is out of the Storm Cat mare Pondering and is owned by Mark Haisfield, who is associated with Stonewall. She had raced only one time prior to her OBS Championship victory, taking a maiden race at one mile and 70 yards on grass by 1 ¼ lengths Feb. 18 at Tampa Bay.

“Right now, we’re going to get her back home safe,” said Estevez following the OBS Championship. “We’re going to regroup and then find out what the best race is for her. Nobody knows how special their horse is until they’ve run a race like this and now we know how special she is.”

Lane’s End, agent, scratched Andrew’s Girl from the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale. Eddie Woods, agent, consigned her to the 2011 OBS March select juvenile auction, but he bought the chestnut filly back for $72,000.

The divisions of the OBS Championship were among the four races on the program for the auction firm’s annual day of racing for 3-year-old graduates of its sales. The event is known as the Day of Champions. Who Is Camille (by Dixie Union) triumphed by a length in the filly division of the OBS Sprint Stakes at six furlongs, posting a time of 1:11. The winning rider was John Velazquez. Devoted Wildcat (by Forest Wildcat) was the one-length winner of the male division of the OBS Sprint. He completed six furlongs in 1:10.80 while being ridden by Kent Desormeaux.

Mucho Macho Man continued his winning ways when the odds-on favorite held off a stubborn Tackleberry in the $294,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II) March 10.

The one-turn mile contest at South Florida’s Gulfstream Park gave the son of Macho Uno his second stakes win of the year and his first graded stakes victory since taking the 2011 Risen Star Stakes (gr. II) more than a year ago. Mucho Macho Man is trained by Kathy Ritvo and owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Dream Team One Racing Stable. He was bred in Florida by John and Carole Rio.

Mucho Macho Man faced a short but largely talented field of four other competitors as the 7-10 choice. His primary competition was Tackleberry, a grade II winner and a local favorite based at Calder Casino & Race Course in the barn of his owner/trainer Luis Olivares. Also in the field was grade I winner Jackson Bend, owned by Robert LaPenta and Fred Brei, who was coming off a win in the Hal’s Hope Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park. Jackson Bend, the high weight carrying 122 pounds, is trained by Nick Zito.

When the gates opened, it was Tackleberry and rider Rajiv Maragh who took an anticipated spot on the front end and led the field through fractions of :24.52, :47.04, and 1:09.87. The pacesetter has good credentials at Gulfstream, having defeated Soaring Empire and Tizway in this race a year ago, but he was coming into a race off a nine-month layoff.

Mucho Macho Man, ridden by Ramon Dominguez, stalked Tackleberry the length of the backstretch then began to move through the turn. He got a short lead coming out of the turn but Tackleberry, third choice at 5-1, wasn’t done and fought back to run several more strides none-to-nose with the favorite. Mucho Macho Man dug in, however, and pulled away in the final furlong to win by two lengths in a final time of 1:35.50.

“There was a little seam as we went down the backside, and I didn’t hesitate to take it,” said Dominguez. “From there, he just fell into that long stride of his and I just pressed a little bit when I felt it was the right time. He’s just been so impressive. He’s run so well going both one turn and two turns, I can’t really tell if he’s better on one than the other.”

Ritvo said she didn’t need to give Dominguez any instructions.

“We let him work the other day—the last work—and he just wanted to do it,” she said. “He came into the race perfectly.”

Ritvo and Dean Reeves both said the next race for Mucho Macho Man won’t be decided for awhile.

“We really hadn’t talked about it,” Reeves said. “We’ll see in the next couple weeks and see what the best spot is.”

Tackleberry was second by half a length over the late-running Jackson Bend, who raced three or four paths wide through most of the race after thrwoing his head at the start and breaking poorly. Jackson Bend was 2 1/2 lengths in front of Cajun Breeze. Clean Shot finished last and Soaring Stocks had been scratched.

Jockey John Velasquez said Jackson Bend acted up as the gate opened and he stumbled going out.

“I had to make a move a little earlier than I wanted to keep close and from there he just didn’t have it,” the rider said. “Nothing you can really do. Just move on to the next one.”

Olivares was thrilled with Tackleberry’s performance.

“He ran a monster race, a monster race,” he said. “I’m very happy. I’m very proud of him. He came back, he never quit. I’m very proud of him.”

Zagora is on track to pursue consecutive victories in the race that gave her grade I status—the Diana Stakes at Saratoga.

The 5-year-old French-bred daughter of Green Tune took another step toward that goal and proved her mettle March 10 by winning impressively as the 4-5 favorite against a field of eight challengers in the $150,000 Hillsborough Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Tampa Bay Downs (VIDEO). Zagora started the year with a 2 1/4-length win in the Endeavour Stakes (gr. IIIT) over the Tampa grass course Feb. 4.

“I thought she showed good turn of foot when he turned her loose,” said trainer Chad Brown. “Today was a harder race than the Endeavour so she can use a little bit more time to recover. My main goal with her this summer would be the Diana again. We know she likes Saratoga and it is a very prestigious race to win.”

Zagora, one of four graded stakes winners in the 1 1/8-mile race on firm turf, started in mid-pack as the field rolled passed the Tampa Bay Downs grandstand and into the first turn. Taking the lead early and holding it for the better part of the race was 96-1 shot Megaspiel ridden by Scott Spieth. The daughter of Singspiel clicked off solid fractions of :23.49, :47.38, and hit the six-furlong mark in 1:11.57.

As the field approached the second turn, jockey Javier Castellano moved Zagora to the outside of Federation and shot quickly past five horses to the lead. Out of the turn, Zagora fanned wide into the middle of the track and lost some momentum but quickly regained her focus. A sixteenth of a mile from the wire, Zagora hit the passing gear again and rolled to a 1 3/4-length win over the Great Britain-bred Federation and jockey Pablo Morales. They held on to finish second by a neck over Unbridled Humor, ridden by Joe Rocco Jr.

The final time was 1:46.97, slightly off the course record of 1:46.34. Carrying the high weight of 122 pounds, Zagora ran the final quarter-mile in :23 1/5.

“When I asked her for run getting to the stretch she just took off,” said Castellano, who rode her to victory in the Diana last year. “I let her go wide so there would be no traffic, and she did the rest on her own.”

Brown said he thought Castellano rode a smart race.

“He kept her in the clear, knowing he’s on the best horse,” Brown said. “He got carried out a little on the final turn but it wasn’t his fault as far as I could see. She still overcame it. She’s a pro. I think she is bigger and stronger this year.”

Zagora is owned by Martin Schwartz who gave a lot of credit to Michel Zerolo of Oceanic Bloodstock, who bred the mare and picks out most of Schwartz’s runners. The winner is out of Zaneton, by Mtoto.

“And Chad Brown is second to none,” Schwartz said following the race. “He is going to rewrite history along the way.”

As for Zagora’s next race, Schwartz said he’d like to try the Jenny Wiley Stakes (gr. IT) at Keeneland April 14 on the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) undercard. He added, however, that Brown is “slapping his hand” because he likes to space out the mare’s races.

“The Diana is our main goal with her. That would be something special,” Schwartz said

Chris Pratt Cruises to victory in Friday’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix at HITS Thermal to kickoff Horsepower Weekend.

THERMAL, CA (March 10, 2012) – As the final days of the 2012 HITS Desert Circuit approach, Chris Pratt of Lake View Terrace, California shifted things into high gear when he and Indigo Farms, LLC’s Cruise beat out 54 other starters to take the top prize in Friday’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Pratt’s victory is his first of the season after he and Cruise finished fourth in the $53,000 Chartis Grand Prix CSI2*-W, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, last week. Friday’s win was the launch for the season finale at the HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, California with the festivities for Horsepower Weekend officially underway.
For the third year in a row, the show grounds in Thermal have been invaded by luxury speed-machines courtesy of sponsor Lamborghini of Newport Beach. Lining the berms of the Strongid® C 2X Grand Prix arena are the very best in sports car technology and design. This year’s line-up includes a couple of very sleek McLarens, the Fiskar, which pairs electric technology with the power of a sports car, and a reproduction of a late 1950s Porsche that has the eye of several exhibitors and even members of the HITS Staff.

As millions of dollars of dormant horsepower sat quietly on the berms, an equally valuable assemblage of active horsepower took to the field to challenge Olympic Course Designer Olaf Petersen, Sr.’s Grand Prix track.
Friday’s class was a “who’s who” of West Coast show jumping and offered the perfect mix of excitement and drama as High-Performance riders tune up for Sunday’s $200,000 Lamborghini Grand Prix, presented by Lamborghini of Newport Beach. Petersen set a dynamic 1.50 meter course that took riders and horses on a journey of height, stamina and speed. The first 12 riders failed to master Petersen’s test, with much of the trouble coming at his double combination at fence five. Mexico’s 2011 Pan-Am Team Bronze Medalist Antonio Maurer and his own Callao were the first to go clear, and were immediately joined in the jump-off by Pratt and Cruise who followed behind them in the order.
Seven trips later, Rich Fellers of Wilsonville, Oregon and Harry & Mollie Chapman’s Flexible completed a clean round of their own to make it three in the jump-off with more than half of the class still left to show. After the next 16 riders failed to advance to the short course, John McConnell of Lemitar, New Mexico piloted Rancho Corazon, LLC’s Katie Riddle to a clean ride, making it four in the jump-off. Forty-fourth in the order, Lane Clarke of Laguna Nigel, California and Granville Equine’s Casseur de Prix were the final pair to go clean in the first round, setting the stage for a five man jump-off.
For the jump-off, Petersen brought back 10 efforts, including the liverpool and the a and b elements from his triple combination, which prevented nine first-round riders from advancing to the jump-off.
Maurer and Callao were up first in the jump-off and wasted no time setting the Great American Time to Beat at 41.626 seconds. Their glory only lasted a few moments as Pratt and Cruise immediately followed them and managed to shave nearly two seconds off their time to take the lead in 39.286 seconds.

After the class, Pratt was already looking ahead to Sunday, and beyond. “My horse was right on form today. I hope we left something in the tank for Sunday. If my schedule fits, I’d love to go to Saugerties for the [Pfizer] Million. I’ve heard such great things about that class.”
Fellers and Flexible were next to show and unfortunately dropped the very first rail. They made it through the rest of the route without any trouble to finish in 40.626 seconds with four jumping faults, which earned them third place. McConnell and Katie Riddle followed and also suffered a jumping fault when they knocked a rail at the 9a-b combination to finish in fourth place.
Clarke and Casseur de Prix had the final opportunity and seemed to be on their way to a double clear ride, but heartbreak came at the last line when they dropped rails on the last two fences. They crossed the timers in 41.107 seconds with eight jumping faults to finish in fifth place.
With Friday’s class in the books, all eyes are now on Sunday’s $200,000 Lamborghini Grand Prix finale which, as the final qualifying opportunity of the Circuit for September’s Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, is expected to draw a large starting field and an even bigger spectator crowd eager to witness who will be crowned the champion of the richest Grand Prix on the West Coast. Sunday’s schedule will include several specialty classes starting at 8am with the $25,000 California Horsetrader Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic High, followed by the $25,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix at 11am and the Grand Prix at 2pm.
“Sunday will be a spectacular finish to a spectacular season here in the desert,” said Tom Struzzieri, HITS President and CEO. “Everything about this year has been a great indication of the bright future ahead for the Desert Circuit. The success of this season will pave the way for some new and exciting additions, not just here in Thermal, but across all of the HITS Circuits.”

HITS Ocala wraps up the prelude to seven weeks of non-stop, rated hunter/jumper competition.

OCALA, FL (February 2, 2012) – HITS Ocala kicked off the 2012 Winter Circuit in style with perfect weather, immaculate grounds and eager competitors during the first two weeks of unrated competition at Post Time Farm. Hunter and Jumper riders alike took advantage of early qualifying opportunities as the fever surrounding HITS’ Championship Weekend begins to spike. Qualifiers for the 2012 Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final will continue to be offered throughout the 2012 winter circuit.

Highlighting the past two weeks was the $20,500 Marshall & Sterling Children’s/Adult Jumper Championship, which crowned Charlene Graham of Fairport, New York as Champion after four legs of competition.

Jonathan Millar finishes first and second in the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health
As pre-circuit competition came to a close, Jonathan Millar of Ontario, Canada, found success in the weekend’s featured Grand Prix class after he placed first and second in the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Millar claimed the blue ribbon aboard Iron Horse Farm’s Cantero Z and then added a second-place finish aboard Contino 14, owned by Millar Brooke Farm, LTD.

Course designer Doug Russell of Ocala, FL set a first-round track that produced five clear rounds for the jump-off. Advancing to the jump-off along with Millar and his two horses where Jordan Coyne of New Port Richey, FL aboard her own Lazaro; Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, PA and her own Carigor Z; and Hugh Graham of Ontario, Canada aboard King Ridge Stables’ Distant Star 3E.

“We got very lucky with another gorgeous day of weather,” said Millar. “I thought the course was designed just right. We had a great jump-off and my horses were just fantastic today.”

Millar and Cantero Z were the first to show in the jump-off and easily set the Great American Time to Beat at 37.864 seconds, which went untouched and earned him the win. Millar was also last to show in the jump-off on his second mount Contino 14 and rode nicely to the finish with a clear round in 38.777 seconds to sweep first and second place.

Stovel and her own Carigor Z produced a clear round in 39.368 seconds to ultimately finish in third. Jordan Coyne and Lazaro finished with four jumping faults in 37.939 seconds to which land them in fourth place.

Hugh Graham and Distant Star 3E posted a quick time of 37.264 seconds, but suffered eight jumping faults to settled in fifth place.

“The pre-circuit was very nice,” Millar commented. “The footing was great today and all the horses jumped well over the past few weeks. We really enjoyed it here. I’d like to thank Iron Horse Farm, the owners of Cantero Z. I hope to return at some point during the circuit to pick up some more Grand Prix classes.”

$2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome
Amanda Flint and her own Superbad kicked-off the second week of pre-circuit competition with a win in the first $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome of the season. Tracy Magness was in hot pursuit of Flint and rode Mr. & Mrs. Bartko’s Consulado to a second place finish. Millar warmed up for a Grand Prix victory by guiding Millar Brooke Farm Ltd.’s Calvin Klein to a third place finish in the Brook Ledge Open Welcome. Rounding out the top five was My Weber aboard Available Jumpers.com’s Available Heartbreaker in fourth and Maria Van Buskirk in the irons of her own VDL Theresa Lady in fifth.

Kelley Farmer and Vox capture a win in the $2,500 Devoucoux 3’3” Hunter Prix
This weekend’s Devoucoux Hunter Prix marked the second Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final qualifier of the season at HITS Ocala. Kelley Farmer of Keswick, VA and Larry Glefke’s Vox were one of 31 horse-and-rider combinations to compete on a course designed by Doug Russell of Ocala, FL and finished the class with the blue ribbon.

As the top 12 riders returned for the second round, Farmer sat in second place behind Maggie Gould and Bases Loaded, owned by AM Free Inc. A second round score of 90 for Farmer and Vox clinched the win as Amanda Steege of Bedminster, NJ and Michelle Barber’s Harvard finished in second place. Gould and Bases Loaded ultimately finished with third place honors.

High-Performance rider and 2011 Diamond Mills Hunter Prix finalist Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, TX, made her return to competition this week and started the season off with a fourth place finish in the $2,500 Devoucoux Hunter Prix aboard MTM Farm’s MTM Follow Me. Fenney is once again on the road to the richest weekend of show jumping as a perennial contender for the Pfizer Million and Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final.

“It’s always good to be in Ocala,” said Fenney. “This is a second home for us and our horses and one of my favorite places to be during the year. We just started showing again this week after a long break and this was a good way to start. Last year, this was one of my favorite classes and it’ll be great to qualify again for the finals.”

Brandie Holloway rounded out the top five aboard Hays Investment Corp.’s Cornerstone.
