Congratulations Clint Allen on becoming Equi-Stat’s Top Rider of 2011!

We are proud to announce that Clint Allen has been named cutting’s leading rider for 2011 by Equi-Stat! Consistency was key last year for Clint, who cut to $528,750 and led by a $86,615-margin. He also led the division in the 4-Year-old competition by $220,717, earning just over $400,000 on his 4-year-olds alone. Last year put Clint over the $3 million mark, which places him in a prestigious bracket that holds less than 25 NCHA Open riders.

Clint attributes this monumental year in his career to an incredible string of horses, loyal customers and a dedicated team that stands behind him, none of which this could have been possible without.

“It’s a great honor to be named the leading rider for 2011,” he said. “But while my name is on the award, I have to stress that it wasn’t just me. I have a great support system behind me. From my help at the barn and on the road, to sponsors, customers, and numerous professionals in the business – none of it would be possible without them.”

In 2011, Clint made 65 Open finals across the nation. Through nine Open Championships, which included winning the Australian Futurity, and the 4-Year-Old Open at Tunica, West Texas and the Cotton Stakes, and 10 Reserve Championships, including one at the NCHA Super Stakes worth more than $60,000, Clint has once again proven himself in the show pen and substantiated his training program as a leading operation within the NCHA.

HITS Ocala wraps up the prelude to seven weeks of non-stop, rated hunter/jumper competition.

OCALA, FL (February 2, 2012) – HITS Ocala kicked off the 2012 Winter Circuit in style with perfect weather, immaculate grounds and eager competitors during the first two weeks of unrated competition at Post Time Farm. Hunter and Jumper riders alike took advantage of early qualifying opportunities as the fever surrounding HITS’ Championship Weekend begins to spike. Qualifiers for the 2012 Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final will continue to be offered throughout the 2012 winter circuit.

Highlighting the past two weeks was the $20,500 Marshall & Sterling Children’s/Adult Jumper Championship, which crowned Charlene Graham of Fairport, New York as Champion after four legs of competition.

Jonathan Millar finishes first and second in the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health
As pre-circuit competition came to a close, Jonathan Millar of Ontario, Canada, found success in the weekend’s featured Grand Prix class after he placed first and second in the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Millar claimed the blue ribbon aboard Iron Horse Farm’s Cantero Z and then added a second-place finish aboard Contino 14, owned by Millar Brooke Farm, LTD.

Course designer Doug Russell of Ocala, FL set a first-round track that produced five clear rounds for the jump-off. Advancing to the jump-off along with Millar and his two horses where Jordan Coyne of New Port Richey, FL aboard her own Lazaro; Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, PA and her own Carigor Z; and Hugh Graham of Ontario, Canada aboard King Ridge Stables’ Distant Star 3E.

“We got very lucky with another gorgeous day of weather,” said Millar. “I thought the course was designed just right. We had a great jump-off and my horses were just fantastic today.”

Millar and Cantero Z were the first to show in the jump-off and easily set the Great American Time to Beat at 37.864 seconds, which went untouched and earned him the win. Millar was also last to show in the jump-off on his second mount Contino 14 and rode nicely to the finish with a clear round in 38.777 seconds to sweep first and second place.

Stovel and her own Carigor Z produced a clear round in 39.368 seconds to ultimately finish in third. Jordan Coyne and Lazaro finished with four jumping faults in 37.939 seconds to which land them in fourth place.

Hugh Graham and Distant Star 3E posted a quick time of 37.264 seconds, but suffered eight jumping faults to settled in fifth place.

“The pre-circuit was very nice,” Millar commented. “The footing was great today and all the horses jumped well over the past few weeks. We really enjoyed it here. I’d like to thank Iron Horse Farm, the owners of Cantero Z. I hope to return at some point during the circuit to pick up some more Grand Prix classes.”

$2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome
Amanda Flint and her own Superbad kicked-off the second week of pre-circuit competition with a win in the first $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome of the season. Tracy Magness was in hot pursuit of Flint and rode Mr. & Mrs. Bartko’s Consulado to a second place finish. Millar warmed up for a Grand Prix victory by guiding Millar Brooke Farm Ltd.’s Calvin Klein to a third place finish in the Brook Ledge Open Welcome. Rounding out the top five was My Weber aboard Available Jumpers.com’s Available Heartbreaker in fourth and Maria Van Buskirk in the irons of her own VDL Theresa Lady in fifth.

Kelley Farmer and Vox capture a win in the $2,500 Devoucoux 3’3” Hunter Prix
This weekend’s Devoucoux Hunter Prix marked the second Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final qualifier of the season at HITS Ocala. Kelley Farmer of Keswick, VA and Larry Glefke’s Vox were one of 31 horse-and-rider combinations to compete on a course designed by Doug Russell of Ocala, FL and finished the class with the blue ribbon.

As the top 12 riders returned for the second round, Farmer sat in second place behind Maggie Gould and Bases Loaded, owned by AM Free Inc. A second round score of 90 for Farmer and Vox clinched the win as Amanda Steege of Bedminster, NJ and Michelle Barber’s Harvard finished in second place. Gould and Bases Loaded ultimately finished with third place honors.

High-Performance rider and 2011 Diamond Mills Hunter Prix finalist Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, TX, made her return to competition this week and started the season off with a fourth place finish in the $2,500 Devoucoux Hunter Prix aboard MTM Farm’s MTM Follow Me. Fenney is once again on the road to the richest weekend of show jumping as a perennial contender for the Pfizer Million and Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final.

“It’s always good to be in Ocala,” said Fenney. “This is a second home for us and our horses and one of my favorite places to be during the year. We just started showing again this week after a long break and this was a good way to start. Last year, this was one of my favorite classes and it’ll be great to qualify again for the finals.”

Brandie Holloway rounded out the top five aboard Hays Investment Corp.’s Cornerstone.

After Hours
As HITS Ocala moves into seven weeks of show jumping competitions, festivities are underway at the HITS Overlook VIP Club. Featured during Week I will be food service by local favorite Ipanema. Special events will also be hosted throughout the circuit. For a complete list of upcoming special events, visit HitsShows.com.

Coming up
The first A-rated week of competition at HITS Ocala begins this week and will mark the first of seven consecutive rated weeks of show jumping at Post Time Farm including the first two sponsored Grand Prix of the season – the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix on Saturday and the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix on Sunday. Riders from around the world will travel to HITS Ocala this season to pack the show rings with some of the most exciting show jumping in the nation as qualifiers for the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final act as the main attractions.

What Are The Symtoms of EHV-1 and How Do I Protect My Horse?

by Christi Garfinkel, DVM

EHV-1, along with EHV-4, are the two herpesvirus strains that cause the most respiratory disease in horses and, like influenza virus, these viruses cause high fevers, lethargy, an initially clear nasal discharge that turns purulent, lymph node enlargement and swelling in the throatlatch area, occasional limb edema, and a predisposition for secondary bacterial bronchitis or bronchopneumonia.

So the answer to this question is, in most instances, that the symptoms of EHV-1 are those of respiratory infection and are indistinguishable from EHV-4 infection or influenza. Testing of blood and nasal secretions is necessary to distinguish among viruses that affect the equine upper respiratory tract.

EVH-1 differs from these other respiratory tract viruses in its propensity to affect two other major body systems-the central nervous system and the reproductive tract. EHV-1 can cause abortion in pregnant mares, in storms if a herd is unvaccinated. Making the headlines most recently, however, is the neurologic form of EHV-1 infection. This manifestation, although infrequent, can be life-threatening and is the disease entity people usually refer to when discussing EHV-1.

The signs of neurologic EHV-1 infection range from mild hind limb ataxia (lack of coordination) to urine dribbling and inability to void the bladder properly, loss of sensation around the tailhead and thighs, weakness in the hind limbs severe enough to cause difficulty in rising, and weakness severe enough that the horse may dog sit or lie down without being able to stand up at all.

Owners should know that transmission takes place via direct or indirect contact with the nasal discharge or aerosolized droplets coughed up and liberated into the stable air by an infected horse. The two best strategies for protecting your horse are to limit exposure and maintain appropriate immunization among the permanent residents on a given premises.

To limit exposure, select a boarding facility that has a mostly permanent resident population and that practices good quarantine protocol for incoming horses. At the stable and especially at shows, prevent nose-to-nose contact with other horses and do not allow your horse to drink from a community water trough or contact feed or water buckets from other horses. Don’t pet or interact with other horses, and don’t lend out your grooming implements or feed and water tubs. Wash and disinfect your trailer after shows and, if you transport horses commercially via land or air, ask whether the vehicles or boxes are disinfected with antiviral agents between shipments.

At any stable, newly arrived horses should be segregated from the resident horse population for no less than 14 days, and preferably 21 days. This allows sufficient time for diseases to complete their incubation time and manifest as disease before the horse has been turned out into a group pasture.

With regard to vaccination, one of the most intimidating aspects of EHV-1 infection is that immunization does not appear to confer protection against the neurologic form of the disease. In fact, it has been proposed that vaccination induces high antibody levels which, although helpful and an important part of the immune response in most instances, in this scenario contribute to the problem by binding with virus particles to form small complexes that damage and block capillaries of the spinal cord.

When this happens, neurons in the spinal cord that received blood flow from a damaged capillary are injured by ischemia (no blood flow) in the same manner as stroke occurs in the brain. This most often affects the lower spinal cord segments, and the resulting clinical signs are ataxia, with or without urinary incontinence, penile paralysis, or loss of hind limb strength.

Immunity following a herpesvirus infection lasts for three to four months. Because the neurologic form of EHV-1 already has affected many horses in multiple states in 2011 and has caused the deaths of at least a dozen horses, I recommend that owners make an appointment to review their horses’ immunization status with their veterinarian and talk with him or her about making a contingency plan that can be implemented if a horse develops fever or nasal discharge.

***** I am so impressed with your product. June 8, 2011

Reviewer: karen moore from Hampstead, NC United States

I have been giving to my horse for 30 days and have noticed improvement. Originally purchased mushroom matrix for sarcoid on my Arabian mare based on a blog I read. Not only is her sarcoid showing signs of calming but her allergy to the no seeums has calmed too. I can’t wait to see what the next 3 months look like.

***** ECP Matrix June 6, 2011

Reviewer: Pia Johansson from Hiawassee, GA United States

I love your products, my mare 25 yr old quarter horse was diagnosed with either a heart tumor or lymphoma, she has been on a holistic lymphatic drainage product and ECP Matrix for 6 mos. now, she is bucking and running & we thought she was going to pass away. My veterinarian, Dr Brennen, recommended your product to me. She said that ECP Matrix will boost your horse’s immune system, she uses this product instead of certain vaccines. I have a Clydesdale farm in GA. 2 summers ago, I had a young filly Clydesdale that acquired some growths in her ears (from flies), they look like broccoli sprouts, very hard & painful. I started her on ECP and 3 mos. later they literally fell out. This past summer this happened to 2 of my young Clydesdales, Hoss & Lil Joe, I started them on ECP & 4 mos. later their ears were clean. I rescued these 2 horses, their immune system was in bad shape & they were malnourished. They are almost 18 hands & not yet 3 yrs. old. Your product definitely works!
